Road Widening & Road Reconfiguration

Road widening and reconfiguration schemes are undertaken to increase network capacity, improve operational performance, and meet current highway design standards. These interventions are typically informed by traffic modelling, capacity analysis, and safety audits, ensuring alignment with guidance from National Highways and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB).

Road widening involves the horizontal expansion of the existing carriageway to accommodate additional running lanes, auxiliary lanes, or widened verges. Works may include:

  • Pavement reconstruction and strengthening to accommodate increased loading (in accordance with DMRB CD 226)

  • Earthworks, including embankment widening and slope stabilisation

  • Drainage modifications such as extension of carrier drains, attenuation systems, and outfalls

  • Relocation or protection of statutory undertakers’ apparatus (utilities)

  • Installation or modification of safety barriers, signage, and lighting systems

Road reconfiguration focuses on optimising the geometric layout and traffic operation of the highway. This can include:

  • Junction redesign (priority junctions, signalised intersections, or roundabouts)

  • Introduction of dedicated turning lanes, merge/diverge tapers, and lane realignment

  • Traffic signal staging and control strategy upgrades

  • Implementation of active traffic management measures

  • Reallocation of road space for multimodal use (e.g., bus lanes, cycle infrastructure, pedestrian facilities)

Steel Fixing

Steel fixing is a fundamental component of reinforced concrete construction, directly influencing the structural performance and durability of road and civil infrastructure. At Roadbuild, our skilled steel fixers deliver precise installation of reinforcement in accordance with detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and relevant standards.

Our services include the placement, tying, and securing of rebar, mesh, and prefabricated reinforcement cages for foundations, ground beams, slabs, retaining structures, drainage systems, and heavy-duty pavements. We ensure correct bar spacing, cover, lap lengths, anchorage, and positioning using appropriate spacers, chairs, and tying techniques to maintain compliance throughout the pour.

We work in line with industry standards such as BS 8666 and Eurocode 2, ensuring all reinforcement is installed to meet structural design requirements and load performance criteria.

Our team is experienced in reading bending schedules, coordinating with formwork and concrete operations, and maintaining strict quality control and inspection processes. With a strong emphasis on health & safety, accuracy, and programme delivery, we provide reliable steel fixing solutions for projects of all scales.

Residential / Domestic Works

At Roadbuild, we deliver high-quality residential and domestic construction works, combining technical expertise with a strong focus on finish, detail, and overall landscape design. Our team specialises in the construction of driveways, patios, pathways, and fully integrated landscaping solutions, tailored to complement both modern and traditional properties.

We work with a wide range of materials including resin-bound surfacing, block paving, natural stone, porcelain paving, and reinforced concrete. Our landscaping services include turfing, planting, garden levelling, retaining features, edging, and soft landscaping works—ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing external environment.

All groundwork is carried out to specification, including excavation, sub-base installation (typically MOT Type 1 or equivalent), compaction, and drainage systems designed in line with SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) principles. We ensure correct setting out of levels and falls to promote effective water management and long-term durability.

Our operatives are experienced in integrating hard and soft landscaping elements, installing edge restraints, kerbing, and step features, while maintaining precise finishes in line with project drawings and client expectations. We also carefully coordinate with existing structures, services, and architectural features to achieve a seamless result.

With a strong emphasis on quality control, health & safety, and attention to detail, we deliver durable, low-maintenance solutions that enhance both the functionality and aesthetic value of residential properties.

Nature and Conservation

Natural and conservation construction involves the design and delivery of low-impact access routes that integrate sensitively with the surrounding environment while ensuring durability, safety, and accessibility. Schemes are typically developed in accordance with guidance from Natural England and Forestry England, with careful consideration of ecological constraints and land use.

Works generally include:

  • Route alignment and profiling to minimise gradients, manage drainage, and reduce environmental disturbance

  • Surface construction, using materials such as compacted stone, bound gravel, timber boardwalks, or recycled aggregates depending on ground conditions and usage requirements

  • Drainage installation, including cross drains, swales, and permeable construction to prevent erosion and waterlogging

  • Habitat protection measures, such as root protection zones, buffer areas, and seasonal working restrictions

  • Access infrastructure, including steps, ramps, bridges, and viewing platforms designed to meet relevant accessibility standards where required

Construction methodologies prioritise minimal excavation, reuse of on-site materials, and low ground-pressure plant to reduce ecological impact. Erosion control, sediment management, and reinstatement works are integral to ensuring long-term sustainability.

The result is a resilient, well-integrated trail that enhances public access while preserving the natural character and biodiversity of the site.
